Replacing the brake system

Postby rbrtsims5 » Tue May 10, 2011 3:21 pm

Just purchased a low-end bike to get into mountain biking and now realize the brakes used on the bike are cantilever. While I am no expert I find them tricky to adjust and that they have rather ineffective stopping power. Is it possible to replace the system with a linear pull brake set up?

Are you sure they aren't v-brakes?

yeah right now I have cantilever brakes. It says it on the side, I checked the manual, and asked about it at a local bike shop. I would like to put in V brake but don't know if you can change out braking systems on a bike or does it just depend on the model?

The mounting points on the frame and fork are the same so it is not an issue. Now you may need levers as well as the brakes themselves as there are different pull ratios on levers. A decent quality lever such as the Avid Speed Dials are a great pair.
No applause please!! Just Money..Thank you..
