How do YOU remove grips from your bars?

Postby Robbieisbobert » Sun Apr 03, 2011 8:17 pm

Just like the title says. I recently put on a set of Oury grips on my mountain bike to replace some Renthal grips and it got me thinking: how do other folks remove their grips from their handlebars? I'm also curious as to whether or not you reuse your grips. For instance, when you need to cut down your bars, would you like to reinstall your old grips or would you rather cut them off and install a fresh set?

Cut off the old grips since they're worn already. Coat the inside of the new grips with laquer thinner and put them on quickly. As the laquer thinner dries it helps the grips stick to the bars. Gotta be fast though. Later,

Lock on grips, they go on and off real easy,
But if you have regular non lock on grips, you can slide a skinny screwdriver between the grip and handlebar and work the grip loose by moving the screwdriver all the way around the grips inside to break it loose from sticking.Try not to scratch up your handlebar too much by doing this, you gotta be a little careful using a screwdriver,if you can find somthing with a softer edge but still rigid enough to be pushed down the inside of the grip then use that if you can,I've always just been careful while using a screwdriver. You can also spray wd-40 as you go around the grip while breaking it loose, this will make it a peice of cake to slide the grip off.Everyoone has there own tricks though, you'll probably come up with your own too.

I use my air compressor with a plastic-tipped air nozzle. Slide the nozzle under the end of the grip and blast the air between the grip and the handlebars. The air "lifts" the grip off of the handlebars and you can slide them on and off pretty easily. Sometimes you have to wiggle the nozzle around to get the best results, but it doesn't scratch/mar any of your equipment. No solvents necessary either...

+1 on the lock ons. Been riding the stock grips on my bike for nearly 2 years and they drove me nuts with the constant moving around. Of course, that made for easy removal. Been riding ODI Rogues for a month or more now and never even think about my grips when riding. Love it. I'll stick with lock ons moving forward, even if not the Rogues.

I know it's the opposite of taking grips off, but when putting them on, hair spray works great. It makes the bar slippery when first sprayed on, they it drys tacky to keep the grips in place. Just make sure you slide them on right after you spray the bars.

+1 on the compressor....Or cut them off if your not using them..

If there is no compressor sometimes a bit of soapy water in a spray bottle plus something that is not sharp inserted partially into the space between the bar and grip with a bit of that soapy solution to help get things moving works great.

Like Madslacker...I only use lock-on grips..I don't like the struggle so the added cost to the grip is well worth it.
No applause please!! Just Money..Thank you..

rubbing alcohol works as a quick lubricant and it evaporates quickly too. put a little bit of that under the grip and it will helps it slide off.
