One must-ride trail in South Lake Tahoe?

Postby Greg Heil » Thu Jun 21, 2012 9:11 pm

Just rolled into South Lake Tahoe. If you've ridden here, a question for you: what are the 1 or 2 must-ride trails in the area? I was doing some looking in the database, and it looks like there is A LOT of riding nearby.

I have one full day tomorrow and I want to make the most of it!

Greg,
If you get this in time, I believe the one "must ride" in SLT is Mr Toad's Wild Ride. Unfortunately, my vacation in the area got cut short, so I didn't get to it, but I've heard nothing but praise for it. I've worked with guys who lived in the area and a couple of them said they liked it even better than the Downieville Downhill.

If you get to it, we expect a ride report!

Best Wishes,
Skibum

Hey skibum, thanks for the recommendation, but a bunch of people on the FB page were recommending the Tahoe Meadows section of the TRT and the Flume Trail. I ended up adding in another section of the TRT to that for a total of 33 miles of riding... it was a blast! There is so much more to ride in this area... I was eyeing up the ride you mentioned a couple of days ago, and that looks great too.

Can't wait to get back here!

Yeah, TRT/Flume is also a great choice if for the scenery alone. Glad you found something to your liking--as you said,it's an awesome area--certainly more than you can do in a single vacation. It's also on my (very long) list of places I'd like to get back to.

Yeah my "must go back here" list is growing rapidly on this trip!

Pretty much any destination requires at least two trips--one to really get to know the lay of the land and ride the "must ride" or "top 100" trails and a second one to seek out the hidden gems, which are often as satisfying, or even more satisfying, than the big name rides.

Exactly! I've been to Crested Butte twice now (although the first time was only for a couple of days) and there are still trails there that I haven't gotten a chance to ride.

Sure liked XP Trail, thru dense forest, secluded, wet. Doubt it'll be listed anywhere.
South Yuba was fun but lots of Poison Oak.

Flume is the north side of Tahoe, not south. The views are stellar, overlooking the lake. But I found the part of the trail I rode to be a farily boring doubletrack with the little singletrack dusty and soft.
Very little tech. There was a free shuttle, though.
