Rear shock coil options.

Postby spazjensen » Wed Jun 13, 2012 1:58 pm

If there is already a thread that can explain this I'd thank whoever would would show it to me. But I'm looking to change the spring rate of the coil on my current rear shock. I've noticed alot of bottoming out in the rear shock. And it happens before my fork bottoms out. I'm thinking that this means I need a new coil with a better spring rate. My current spring rate is 500 I believe. Is it possible to bump this up to either a 550 or even a 600 rate and fix this bottoming out? I have the preload ring two maybe three full turns down on the coil (thats after the ring contacts the coil). Or am I asking to much to want my rear shock to be "synchronized" with the the same travel rate as my fork. Its an older shock (has no adjustments other than the coil preload) that I would like to upgrade but simply do not have funds to do so. So I try to do what i can. Any help is appreciated.

I've been told you should be using your travel evenly between front and rear, percentage wise. If one is bottoming out, they both should be. Or, if you're using 25% travel in the front, you should be using 25% of the travel in the rear.

Before swapping out a part, make sure you're riding with proper body position. If you're rotating your weight too far back while riding, you'll be using more of your rear travel than your front travel.
