A comedy of errors

Postby Bubblehead10MM » Tue Jul 31, 2012 8:22 am

It Started when I pumped up my tubeless front tire to rated pressure for some road riding. Things went OK and I had a nice ride including some hard cranking on a side road down hill a little getting into the 20's. Then as I'm headed for the truck...BANG! Front tires flopping around. Sucks but no problem, got spares.
I pulled out a brand new tube, slaped it in and shot in a CO2, still seamed soft, so started another CO2, Which I've used 2 before, and BANG! I think the tire slipped off the bead and let the tube loose. Maybe should have cleaned up the Stans more, or at all. :oops:
So I pull out 2nd tube, brand new again, and eyeing the ofending CO2, decide to give my high volume pump a try. Tube one, I start pumping. the bead comes loose once and I had to let air out and start over, finally get it inflated, and pull off the pump. Air hissing out, the tip of the presta valve was still inside the pump. :!:
I've got one more tube. In it goes, pump it up carefully and start riding. I get 100 Yrds, and the bead came loose and the tube bulged out the side and gets rapped up in the fork. So I started over, took the tire off all the way, wiped up as mush slime as I could get with the socks I use to store tubes, and put the now bulgey misshapen tube back on, put in just enough air to hold me and started riding, sloooowly, watching the tire wobble. Cheers, Think the tires shot, Tubes clearly. The wheal was already iffy but might not be any more out of true, crossing fingers.

Dang dude that sounds like an unfortunate ride!! Those are never fun, but they definitely happen.

I've got a story of my own:
Last night I was all stoked to get out for a ride--it had been about 3 or 4 days since I'd been on the bike, which is 3 or 4 days too many. I was all stoked, grabbed my gear quickly and my light and headed out the door, and drove 35 miles from my in-laws place to the nearest trail.

I got out of the truck, pulled my bike out, checked my pressure, and started getting my gear together.... and realize I had forgotten my shoes! Usually my shoes, helmet, and most of my gear stays in the truck, but I had taken it all out because we were moving furniture. I had told myself when I left that I needed to grab them, but to no avail.....

What a let down

@mtbgreg1 Bummer. It's old age setting in :) I rely on lists and post it notes these days. The good news is, that ride was generaly ok. It didn't blow at 23 MPH, and I started pulling some maualles for a couple seconds. :D

So did the air pressure just push the bead off the rim? You're not supposed to ever go over, I think, 40psi, with a tubeless set up.

I'm assuming the bead is broke since it wont stay on.

Look over your rim very carefully and make sure it's okay! I've heard of rim sidewalls deforming when a tire blows off the rim.

I believe so to both. I used too much air, and there's a spot on the bead that feels funny, like it's creased like a piece of paper. I thought maybe the rim was slippery and it would do better cleaned up to. This is also the same tire I ran over with a semi tractor. I've got a new tire and tube and will see how it goes. Don't see anything funny on the rim. Thanks

With the new Kenda Nevegal on and a quick test ride, looks like I'm back in business. Just know Y'all are laughing with me. That's the story I'm telling myself, and I'm sticking to it. :lol:

Hmm well there's your problem :mrgreen:

I feel you man. Whenever I have a flat, it always seems to be something stupid causing the issue. Whether it be a broken bead or a bad factory tape job on the rim.

The last flat I had was so frustrating that I went back to tubes. I picked up a nasty thorne that was so big the slime wouldn’t seal the puncture. I didn’t see the thorn, tried to put a tube in the tire. Pump pump pop! Tried another tube. Pump pump pop! 2 tubes later, stranded 4 miles from the trail head, I inspected the inside of the tire and found the monster thorn that just consumed $14 worth of tubes and a portion of my soul.

LOL, I feel your pain man. It's little things, that should be easy and smooth but aren't, that make me want to smash stuff sometimes.

Speaking of thorns, I found this one inside a tire recently. Never knew it was there, Stans sealed the hole. The thorn was stuck to the tire casing right next to the puncture. The spoke nipple is just for size reference.

This is why we feel around the inside of the tire before putting in the new tube. :wink:

That sucks Bubblehead!

@Greg
Flats would have solved that problem ;) (Provided you don't drive in flipflops)

@JT
Don't feel, look! Thorns don't care if it's a finger or a tube, they'll puncture both.

Not that I learned that lesson the hard way. :oops:

I was wearing chacos so it would probably still have been a no go. One wrong move and you could lose a toe.

I hate being so boring. I still use tubes. Carry spares and a patch kit. Isn't it true the only way to keep a totaly blown tubeless is to put in a tube? Just checking. :mrgreen: Later,
