I have trouble understanding the world of banking. The company was making money and was making its payments on some sort of financing arrangement without problem. But the bank found an overstatement on some obscure line in the contract and rather than give the company a chance to fix the problem, they simply called in the loan therby assuring that they woudl receive nothing on the loan that they had made. And by doing this, they wiped out the employment and lives of 70 people.

But now the banks books are taut and everything is fine.

I have trouble understanding the world of banking.

It's because a balance sheet reporting issue between the customer and the bank, unresolved, becomes a balance sheet reporting issue between the bank and the government...Banks don;t like extra government scrutiny if they can help it.
