I was wondering the same thing. Apple Orchard mountain is the highest point in VA on the parkway and I had already passed it. Might be a budgetary thing. There was no snow there (til Sunday). Thinking out loud, if they are keeping that closed til early spring then it should be an awesome shuttle ride with very little climbing from Apple Orchard mountain to the James River at Big Island. It was gated at Big Island a few weeks ago, so I'm guessing it still is. Its pretty cool riding with no cars. Not sure of the legality on bikes. I'm not going to ask - college department head told me once - "If you don't ask me I don't have to say no".fleetwood wrote:Nice find. Thanks for sharing. It must be awesome to have so much to explore so nearby. In doing my Dragon's Back research, I'm looking at a 6-7 hour round trip in the truck. Gonna have to make it more than a day trip! But there is plenty out there to keep us busy, right? Plenty, be glad to guide - as long as you don't want to ride too fast. The Grouse - Turkey loop is popular for a first time visit to Dragons Back. Pretty easy to navigate on your own too. They now have signs and parking lots at most of the trailheads
So why did they have the parkway closed down?

So far, my western VA mountain experience is limited to three trips to Douthat in 2011. I hope to expand on that in 2012. I'm not familiar with the F'burg trails, but if that is your main experience, I highly recommend you get out to western VA for some mountain biking.
